EVOSS™ has led to a key discovery that doubles the viable period of the heart outside the body. For hearts alone, this means that EVOSS™ could double the number of available donor hearts worldwide.
So far, the device has been tested on about 200 animal organs. Tests indicate it can keep ex-vivo organs stable and transplantable for 12 to 24 hours – increasing the chance of finding a match of donor and recipient.
Ex-vivo perfusion is poised to transform organ transplantation over the next 10 years by significantly increasing the number of organs viable for transplant, reducing the wait for an organ transplant and improving the outcomes of those receiving a transplant.
Our EVOSS™ portable transplant technology extends the organ’s “ex-vivo” life by keeping the organ warm and supplied with oxygen as if it is still in the body.
By enabling resuscitation, extended preservation and functional assessment, many organs initially deemed unsuitable and discarded will be made available for transplant. The system consists of a common hardware platform with organ-specific, single-use disposable cassettes for lungs, hearts, livers and kidneys.
